Saturday, May 07, 2016 marks the 15th Annual Free Comic Book Day. What IS Free Comic Book Day, you ask?  This event, held annually on the first Saturday in May, celebrates the world of comics by providing FREE comics to attendees.  (More on this below…so keep reading.)

Free Comic Book Day 2016

Free Comic Book Day 2016A retailer named Joe Field suggested the concept in a column he wrote in 2001. The first FCBD was held the following year and is coordinated by the industry’s largest distributor, Diamond Comic Distributors. Publishers participating in the event range from large to small – all vying for a bit of the action. FCBD often receives media coverage and serves as an opportunity for comic book shops to come together and promote their central product – comics. The free comics themselves often become as much an event as the day itself.

Are All Comics Free?

No.  All comics in the shop are not free. In fact, comic shop owners pay a minimal amount per copy of the issues they are allowed to give away as part of the FCBD promotion.

What comics ARE free?

Participating publishers select what comic will be free to consumers. These often tie directly into upcoming storylines and/or events. Both DC and Marvel often utilize these books to help kickoff events.

Do all comic shops have the same promotions?

Comic shops are locally owned and operated. Therefore, it is up to the shop owner to determine what type of promotions (if any) are offered.

Mississippi Comic Shops on FCBD

While living in Hattiesburg, MS, I often attended FCBD at Bombshell Comics & Stuff, and would be returning this year were I living there.  For those who live in the Jackson, MS area, I encourage you to visit Comics Commander. (These are just my own opinions based on my own experiences.)

How can I find a comic shop where I live?
